New Lifeguard on Duty

PACIFIC BEACH, CA – In order to save millions of dollars in salaries and pensions, the city of Pacific Beach, CA has decided to hire hawks as lifeguards for its public beaches. These new lifeguards can spot a drowning victim from over a mile away, quickly pluck them out of the water and return them to shore. The only downside to this new program is that once the person is rescued and returned to shore, they’re immediately eaten. I do suspect this cuts down on the number of repeat offenders. Enjoy!

P.S. Note in the first photo that the gentleman taking a photo of the new lifeguard has already removed his flip-flops… just in case he needs to get out of there quickly. Nothing slows you down more than trying to keep your sandals on while running in the sand. :-)

Odds and Ends

Here’s a small collection of photos from the past few weeks that I just didn’t get around to posting. There are some birds and flowers from the zoo as well as a few more beach shots from around La Jolla… one of my favorite places to visit. Enjoy!

P.S. I’ve included a photo of Dan, my photo safari buddy, in this gallery. He’s a wonderful photographer so be sure to check out his photos at SanDanDiego.com.

Can you spare a dollar(bird)?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never heard of a Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis). I think they’re from the China and Japan area of the world. Anyway, I visited the zoo and found this little guy in the Owens Aviary. I also found a parrot couple, some baby mallards and an unknown species :-) Enjoy!

La Jolla Pelicans

In an earlier post I mentioned that we’re being visited by quite a number of pelicans this year. This should give you an idea… This is just one group on the cliffs at La Jolla Cove.

La Jolla Caves

Dan and I headed back up to La Jolla this evening. It’s been such a beautiful day we just couldn’t resist. This is a photo of the cliffs and caves in La Jolla. As you can see, there are tons of birds (Greebes) perched above the water.

La Jolla Cove

Back to the Cove! Dan and I headed up to the La Jolla Cove this morning and it didn’t disappoint. This week, the San Diego Tribune reported that there is an unusual number of pelicans this year and I think they all landed at the Cove. Enjoy!

The Usual Suspects…

The usual suspects were in Idyllwild this weekend—daffodils, steller jays, squirrels and carpets of yellow. Despite the late snow this year, we still have plenty of daffodils around the house. The squirrels and jays demanded peanuts (I had to coax one jay out of the house) all weekend long and when I drove down through Garner Valley on Sunday I was pleasantly surprised to find the valley floor covered in Spring flowers.

Great White Pelican

This pelican at the Safari Park in Oceanside is the size of a 747 jumbo jet. Not really, but he’s much larger than the brown pelicans you see at the beach.

This peacock knows how beautiful his is so he’s posing for the camera.

It’s Spring!

Mother nature at her best… nuff said :-)
