                                 Casonas & Haciendas
I’m drawn to old places, the damp air of history that seeps through crumbling plaster, peeling paint and water stains. My goal was to capture older houses of San Miguel de Allende
that were ‘untouched’ so to speak. Historic homes that families still live in, haven’t been restored, or professionally redecorated are becoming a rare thing.
The feeling of spirits and souls, of ghostly presences, was palpable in many of these places; and while I was usually alone while photographing these sites, I felt watched when no one was there.
For many years, the noted fashion photographer, Deborah Turbeville, had a home here in one of the oldest casonas in town. She lived there in an artfully ‘decayed’ interior style; a style she often incorporated in her own photography. Perhaps she was drawn to the sense of misty phantoms that hangs in the air of many of these old houses. Her casona is now a boutique hotel.
Let’s explore a little of what lies behind these famous doors.
